During recent studies, scientists have wondered what is connected with the fact that rather vile and unfriendly people succeed in their professional life - and whether genetics can play any role here. Such people usually have three negative qualities, such as narcissism, psychopathy and macchiavellism (in particular, cunning).

Despite the fact that these traits are considered negative, studies have shown that, on the other hand, they give their holder the potential for rapid career growth.

To understand why such traits can play into the hands when it comes to work, Professor Michael Onley from the University of Western Ontario and his colleagues studied the connection between this “triad” of qualities and mental endurance, which was put at the forefront as a basic human trait. that allows you to achieve success.

Mental endurance includes dedication to the goal, motivation, focus, resilience and willingness to challenge. The authors broke it into four factors - control, loyalty, challenge and confidence. As already noted, previous studies have found that narcissism, psychopathy, machiavellism - and mental endurance - have advantages over other qualities of character when it comes to moving up the career ladder. achieving goals and finding personal success in competition.

Even narcissistic traits, such as dedication, charisma and striving for the best for oneself, can be turned into professional benefits.

Similarly, a positive relationship was found between Machiavellianism and the incomes of educated men, which suggests that this trait can be useful when you are moving to a management position. Moreover, in research organizations specializing in sales, employees who demonstrated a high level of Machiavellianism, as a rule, were the most successful - their Machiavellianism allowed them to freely manipulate other people at will.

Thus, these data suggest that cold-blooded people with self-control and self-confidence are able to succeed in a highly competitive market.

Scientists went further, and decided to identify whether a person’s character traits, which determine his success at work, can be genetically embedded in him. To find out, the researchers compared monozygous and dizygotic twins. The former share 100% of their genotype, while the latter, dizygotic, only 50%. Consequently, if genetics plays a large role in the development of certain human traits, then monozygous twins should have approximately the same qualities, while dizygotic ones should have more differences.

So, the researchers asked the twins (152 monozygous pairs and 58 dizygotic ones) to fill out questionnaires with questions about how they relate to certain qualities of character. As a result, the study showed that individual differences in each of the signs of this “triad” largely depend on genetic factors. At the same time, genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in mental endurance.

The study showed that narcissism was inextricably linked with mental stamina. As the scientists explained, this is due to the fact that in selfish behavior there are not only negative but also positive aspects that develop psychological stability on the way to the desired goal.
