Modern requirements of aesthetic dentistry are very different from those that were before. There were artificial materials that can make the client's wishes and his dream of a perfect smile come true. We are talking about veneers. Andrei Marufidi, Chief Physician of the Capital Clinic, a specialist in orthopedics, surgery and implantology told the editorial board what veneers are and how they can change your smile and make you more successful.
Andrei Marufidi, Chief Physician of the Capital Clinic, a specialist in orthopedics, surgery and implantology. The indications for installing veneers are divided into two groups: direct and indirect. In the case of direct, the role is not played by the patient’s “whim”, but by the objective need to install veneers: when there are multiple restorations on the teeth, old and new fillings, caries or crown defects, discoloration (discrepancy of tooth color, darkening).
Indirect indications include the client’s subjective desire to change the shape and color of the tooth, the morphology of its position (for example, when the tooth is swamped towards the tongue or the lip) in order to improve its status and realize its ambitions. With the help of veneers, these aesthetic defects of the teeth can be eliminated.
Types of veneers
There are ceramic veneers, composite veneers, lumineers. Next, there is a division of ultranire (thin veneers) and veneers, which are installed on refractory models.
Composite veneers differ from the others in that they are created from a special composite, from which they make, among other things, fillings and which is intended for the restoration of the front teeth.
Advantages and disadvantages
Veneers allow you to change the color of the teeth and give beauty to the smile, which in turn increases the person’s confidence and self-esteem.
Under lumineers, for example, the teeth are practically not ground; at the expense of lumineers, only the color of the teeth can be changed. Therefore, it is better to use them only when the patient was undergoing orthodontics - the dentition was leveled.
Under the veneers, the teeth have to be slightly processed: sand down and draw the borders of the veneers with the marking boron.
The advantage of composite material is speed and low cost. The disadvantages of such a filling material are that it has to be polished once a year - it is erased and subject to pigmentation.
There are certain preliminary stages. First of all, oral cavity prophylaxis is carried out: hygiene, cleaning, carious processes are eliminated. In short, the oral cavity is completely cleaned - put in proper order.
After, according to certain norms, a photo protocol is made, then impressions are taken, models are made. They are diagnosed, pre-wax modeling is done. Then the model is introduced into the patient's oral cavity in the form of a mocap, without dissecting anything, in order to determine whether such veneers are suitable for the patient, whether they like them or not. The color is not visible at this stage - mocap on plastic.
When the doctor has agreed with the patient about all his desires, the teeth are already prepared for the installation of veneers.
The procedure is painless, if necessary, under anesthesia: working prints are removed and the restoration itself is carried out.
The teeth are most often restored comprehensively: 6, 8, 10 teeth each. Otherwise, if you restore only 3 teeth, for example, the result will be unaesthetic.
For the convenience of the patient and the doctor, it is better to divide the process into two steps: first, take up the teeth on the upper jaw, then on the bottom. Each reception will take approximately 4–5 hours.
The whole process of installing veneers, starting from the stage of prophylaxis, takes from 10 to 30 days.
Rules after the procedure
The inhibited layer of composite veneers is exposed to chemical attack for approximately 24 hours after installation. Therefore, on the day of the installation of veneers and the next day, you should follow the so-called red diet: do not use products that can "stain" teeth. For example, tomatoes, cherries, strawberries, coffee and tea. Sometimes women are not even recommended to wear bright lipstick, as they can be imprinted on the teeth.
Ceramic, refractors and Lumineers, meanwhile, are more resistant to chemical attack and in their case a similar diet is sometimes not even needed.
Veneers on refractors do not have a lifetime and indications for replacement. Composite veneers have a lifespan: it is desirable to supplement them or install new ones for 3-5 years.
